Japan Trip Summary March /April 2016
Adelaide Harmony Choir has been invited by Ito san, conductor of Meikyo Chorus in Nagoya, Japan, for a choral/cultural visit in March/April 2016 where we will perform Mozart Requiem with Meikyo Chorus. In 1997 Meikyo Chorus visited Adelaide and joined with Adelaide Harmony Choir to sing Messiah in the Adelaide Town Hall. The proposed trip to Japan has been enthusiastically endorsed and 46 members and partners have agreed to join this exciting venture.

The sub-committee, comprising Carolyn Mesecke, Rosemary Nairn, Rob Mutton, Lyn and Chris Freeman and Wendy Ambler, has met regularly since 2014 to plan the tour and as the time for departure approaches the bulk of the work is in place with a few more details to finalise.

The repertoire for the tour includes Mozart Requiem, two Japanese cultural songs, Furusato and Kojo No Tsuki (Moon at the Ruined Castle) and the Freedom Trilogy by Paul Halley, to be sung in Latin, South African and English. Also for several lighter concerts we are preparing a variety of Australian-themed songs by Australian composers which depict the diverse beauty and harshness of our land but also the unique character and warmth of the people.

The choir will have the opportunity to enjoy the Cherry Blossom season in the following cities:

Nagoya – As well as performing 3 concerts here we will visit Nagoya Castle, Yamazaki River, Tokugawa Museum, Noritake Factory and the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology.
Yudanaka - After singing a light concert at the Hotel we will see the Snow Monkeys, make soba noodles and have a cultural exchange with a nursing home.
Kyoto – Enjoy the Cherry Blossoms along the Philosopher’s Walk, the Heian Jingu Shrine, Nijo Castle, Kinkakuji Golden Temple and the Kiyomizu Water Temple.
Himeji (Adelaide’s sister city) – Visit the most famous castle in Japan.
Hiroshima – We join with Hiroshima Women’s Choir to sing a peace-themed concert to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Also we visit the Peace Park and Miyajima Island to see the famous temple with the red Tori Gate.

After a farewell dinner in Hiroshima some members will return to Nagoya to fly back to Adelaide. A few others will continue travelling to China and other destinations and about 25 members will travel to Tokyo for more sightseeing before returning to Adelaide.

We are fortunate indeed to have this opportunity to travel and join together in music and fellowship with our friends in Japan, making this a venture to learn about and respect another culture and so promote peace among the nations in just a small way.
